POSITION SUMMARY
Exact duties can depend on a heavy equipment operator’s specialization. Some common responsibilities include the following:
- Responsible for operating several types of power construction equipment such as dump trucks, front end loaders, backhoes, tractor, skid steer loaders, or motor graders to excavate, move and grade earthwork, erect structural and reinforcing steel, setting equipment, installing utility lines, hoist material and performing demolition of structures.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Promote and comply with all city safety policies and procedures.
- Ensure city equipment material and the work site are maintained, kept clean, and stored safely. Collect and dispose of scrap, excess materials and refuse.
- Must be able to make adjustments to hand levers, push pedals, lower a bucket to scoop material, or attach and control attachments such as blades, buckets, scrapers, swing booms, cables, etc.
- Perform maintenance duties such as cleaning, greasing, and oiling machines.
- Performs manual labor tasks such as flagging traffic, mowing/weed-eating right-of-way, cleaning and maintaining streets and ditches, and pouring, spreading, and leveling asphalt, concrete, and gravel.
- Make asphalt and concrete repairs to streets, parking lots, sidewalks, and build, install and replace signs.
- Maintain storm drainage systems.
Hand and foot coordination: You must coordinate your hands and feet to guide large machinery in tight places.
Operation Monitoring: You will have to read gauges, dials, and other indicators and adjust them as necessary.
Interpersonal skills and teamwork: You must coordinate your actions with those of other workers on buys work sites.
Troubleshooting: Be able to detect and fix operating problems.
Critical Thinking: Your job will require that you identify the strengths and weaknesses of solutions to problems to choose the one most likely to be successful and cost-effective.
REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma or equivalent or ten years’ experience operating heavy equipment.
- Possess a valid Texas Driver’s License
- Maintain a professional appearance.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to execute on multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Must have the ability to interact with citizens and city employees in a courteous, professional, and effective manner.
- Must have the ability to work extended periods, shift, and on-call as needed.
